Remembering September 11

Dear Garden City School Community,

Today marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, a day that remains deeply personal for our community. Garden City lost many family members, friends, neighbors and loved ones that day. Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember them and honor their lives.

I remember that day so vividly, and it is hard to believe that 25 years have passed. Yesterday, I met a gentleman at our football game who graduated from Garden City High School and now his grandkids attend our schools. We talked about September 11 and how deeply our community was impacted. That conversation stayed with me. For so many in Garden City, 25 years may have passed, but the memories and the loss are still very real.

Throughout our schools today, students will be engaged in age-appropriate learning about September 11. For our students, September 11 is history. They were not yet born, but they are growing up in a community that was deeply impacted by that day. It is important that they understand what happened, remember the lives that were lost and learn about the tremendous courage and kindness shown by so many.

As part of our remembrance, Fields of Flags will be displayed at our Middle School and High School. I hope they serve as a reminder for all of us to take a moment to remember and reflect.

We remember those we lost and the families who continue to carry their memories with them. We also honor the firefighters, police officers, first responders and countless others who ran toward danger to help others, as well as the members of our military who served our country in the years that followed.

Twenty-five years have passed, but we have not forgotten. We will continue to remember, to teach and to honor.
