The Garden City guidance department recently completed part of its guidance ninth and 10th grade experience which are aligned with the needs identified through the DESSA student survey that was completed by students in the fall. These programs are in addition to one on one meetings held with all students.
In 10th grade push-in lessons titled, ‘The Habit’, counselors visited 10th grade English classes to cover a variety of topics and thinking points for students, including academic performance, extracurricular involvement/engagement, and social responsiveness. Counselors also discussed self-management and decision-making skills.
Ninth grade lessons covered topics of character development, engagement, connection, decision-making and self-management.
Parents of ninth and 10th graders were also hosted to review similar topics of interest. Sophomore parents were treated to a guest speaker, Nicolas Maila-Pazmino, assistant director of undergraduate admissions at Binghamton University. He discussed the importance of growth throughout high school as a learner and an individual. Freshman parents previously met with guidance as well to discuss topics of interest such as transition, graduation requirements and engagement.
