Garden City schools celebrate World Down Syndrome Day with crazy socks

On March 21, students throughout the Garden City School District wore colorful, mismatched socks to celebrate inclusion, kindness and awareness in honor of World Down Syndrome Day.

As part of the celebration, students watched videos about Down syndrome and learned about John’s Crazy Socks, a social enterprise dedicated to spreading happiness through vibrant and fun socks. The company was founded by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down syndrome, alongside his father, Mark X. Cronin. At John’s Crazy Socks, individuals with intellectual disabilities work alongside their neurotypical colleagues, promoting inclusivity and empowerment through opportunity.

After learning about the significance of the day, students colored and decorated their own unique pairs of crazy socks, highlighting the importance of celebrating differences. By recognizing World Down Syndrome Day, the students embraced the messages of inclusion and kindness.
