Dr. Emma Helps Hemlock Students Brush Up on Dental Health

Hemlock students had an exciting and educational visit from dentist Dr. Denise Emma, who taught them about keeping their teeth strong and healthy. The visit was filled with fun demonstrations, hands-on activities and important lessons about oral hygiene.

Dr. Emma started by explaining why dentists wear masks and gloves when working with patients and shared how these protective items help prevent the spread of germs and keep everyone safe. A highlight of the visit was a step-by-step demonstration on how to brush teeth properly. Using a giant model of teeth and an oversized toothbrush, Dr. Emma showed students how to brush in small circles to reach every surface of their teeth and reminded them to floss daily to clean between teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach.

To help students understand how diet affects dental health, Dr. Emma introduced a thumbs up and thumbs down bin. Foods like apples, pretzels, yogurt and water were placed in the thumbs-up bin, showing that they are good for strong teeth. Meanwhile, sugary drinks, candy and soda were placed in the thumbs-down bin because they can lead to cavities.

Dr. Emma’s visit ended with students excited to practice their new brushing skills and make healthier choices for their smiles.
