At Garden City High School, continuing to bring awareness to all regarding integration, collaboration and disabilities through fun learning activities is the best way for students to learn about others. During the month of December, Disability Awareness Month, students took part in a variety of activities that have them flourishing.
Best Buddies recently enjoyed their holiday party with more than 100 participants. Students are still talking about their afternoon with Inclusive Fitness and graduate Conor McCartney. Science teacher Charles Hager met with a smaller group for a Chemistry lab rotation at Best Buddies, as well as in a collaborative event with his class and the Special Class 8:1+2 class which all students enjoyed the experiments. Dr. McKinstry’s College Marketing Class also collaborated with learners in Special Class 8:1+2 and the vocational program for a Holiday Plant Sale, incorporating all aspects of business and marketing. Assistive technology specialist Jenn Martin and speech pathologist Anne Cloghessy also created an interactive station in the library during lunch to demonstrate how students can communicate with others who utilize AAC devices.
The diverse array of activities during Disability Awareness Month not only engaged students but also contributed significantly to their overall learning experience which will continue throughout the school year.
