Music 9-12

Students in grades 9-12 who participate in the Garden City High School music program will develop a deep understanding of music through active engagement in performing, creating, responding, and connecting—core elements of the New York State Learning Standards for Music. Through participation in a variety of ensembles, including choir, band, orchestra, and jazz groups, students will refine their technical skills, musicianship, and artistic expression while working collaboratively with their peers. They will interpret and perform diverse repertoire, develop critical listening and analysis skills, and learn to communicate meaning through music.

Beyond performance, students have the opportunity to explore music composition, theory, and technology. Courses such as Music Industry and Technology, Music Theory Honors, and AP Music Theory provide students with the tools to analyze and create music, deepening their understanding of musical structure, history, and innovation. Through these experiences, students will cultivate creativity, problem-solving skills, and an appreciation for the cultural and historical significance of music. Whether pursuing music for personal enrichment or as a future career path, students in the Garden City High School music program will gain the skills and knowledge to be thoughtful, expressive musicians and lifelong advocates for the arts.
