Music 6-8
In grades 6-8, students continue to build upon their musical foundation through more specialized and advanced opportunities. They can choose to participate in Band, Chorus, Orchestra, or Music In Our Lives. In these courses, students will explore more complex musical concepts, perform in larger ensembles, and refine their skills in both individual and group settings. They will continue to develop their understanding of rhythm, melody, harmony, and dynamics, while also learning about the cultural, historical, and social contexts of the music they study and perform.
Students in Band, Chorus, and Orchestra will focus on improving their technical abilities on their chosen instruments or voice, learning to play or sing more challenging repertoire. As they perform together, they will develop teamwork, discipline, and the ability to communicate through music. These ensembles will allow students to experience the joy of making music with others and gain a deeper appreciation for collaboration and the musical traditions of different cultures.
In Music In Our Lives, students will explore music from a variety of genres and time periods, learning how music shapes and reflects society. They will have opportunities to analyze music critically, create their own compositions, and develop their skills in music technology. This class provides a broader understanding of music, emphasizing how it connects to other subjects, such as history, math, and language, while fostering a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
By the end of middle school, students will have refined their musical skills, whether through instrumental or vocal performance, or through a deeper understanding of music’s role in everyday life. They will leave with a greater ability to express themselves musically, a stronger sense of discipline, and an appreciation for the ways music enhances both their personal growth and the world around them.
