Art 9-12

Students in grades 9-12 who participate in the Garden City High School art program will develop advanced creative and technical skills while deepening their understanding of artistic expression and visual communication. Aligned with the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts, the curriculum provides students with opportunities to create, present, respond to, and connect with art in meaningful ways. Through courses such as Studio Art, AP Art, Media Art, Sculpture, and Photography, students will explore a range of traditional and digital media, refining their ability to apply the elements and principles of design to produce thoughtful, innovative artwork.

As students progress, they will engage in critical analysis of their own work and the work of others, developing a stronger ability to interpret, critique, and appreciate visual imagery. They will explore historical and contemporary artists, gaining insight into how art reflects and influences culture and society. With an emphasis on creativity, problem-solving, and self-expression, the program fosters independent thinking and prepares students for future opportunities in the arts, whether as a career path or a lifelong passion. By the time they complete the program, students will have built a strong portfolio that demonstrates their technical proficiency, artistic voice, and ability to communicate meaning through visual art.
